Tehachapi's dead turbines
"Green power" means generating electricity by burning dollars.

Wind machines, even massively tall and wide contemporary turbines, are wholly inimical to modern power quality. They are rarely reliable, by nature randomly intermittent, and, since their power is a function of the cube of the wind speed along a very narrow speed range, they are always variable. No one can know what they will yield at any future interval. They almost never produce their full capacity. In fact, they average over the course of a year about 25% of their full capacity. More than 60% of the time, they produce less than that. About 10-15% of the time, they produce nothing, often at peak demand times. They typically generate most at times of least demand. Whatever they do produce is changing one minute to the next—in the process destabilizing the necessary match between supply and demand, for blackouts occur when there is too little supply while appliances and transmission systems can be damaged if the supply is excessive.  Unlike machines that produce modern power, wind is neither dispatchable nor controllable, except when shut down completely.

In a March 2010 Guardian interview, Lovelock opined:
“The great climate science centres around the world are more than well aware how weak their science is. If you talk to them privately they’re scared stiff of the fact that they don’t really know what the clouds and the aerosols are doing…We do need skepticism about the predictions about what will happen to the climate in 50 years, or whatever. It’s almost naive, scientifically speaking, to think we can give relatively accurate predictions for future climate. There are so many unknowns that it’s wrong to do it.”
Interesting comments, click here.

“NIWA makes the huge admission that New Zealand has experienced hardly any warming during the last half-century. For all their talk about warming, for all their rushed invention of the “Eleven-Station Series” to prove warming, this new series shows that no warming has occurred here since about 1960. Almost all the warming took place from 1940-60, when the IPCC says that the effect of CO2 concentrations was trivial. Indeed, global temperatures were falling during that period.

The situation in the UK
Wind turbines have to be heated in cold weather or they freeze up, so they cost more electricity to run than they generate.

28/12/10, "In percentage terms, how much electricity do Britain’s 3,150 wind turbines supply to the National Grid? Is it:a) five per cent; b) ten per cent; or c) 20 per cent?...

The correct answer is: none of the above. Yesterday afternoon, the figure was just 1.6 per cent, according to the official website of the wholesale electricity market. Over the past three weeks, with demand for power at record levels because of the freezing weather, there have been days when the contribution of our forests of wind turbines has been precisely nothing.

Uncertainty over the future of the RET comes as the new Victorian Liberal government takes a tougher line on planning approvals for wind farms, increasing the buffer between houses and turbines and declaring several mountainous and coast areas "no-go zones".

Next to useless UK wind farm outputs for the last three months of 2010

Current available figures bring us to conclude that during its lifetime one 3MW turbine will “save” 6,356 tonnes of carbon and “cost” somewhere between 27,213 and 40,773 tonnes of carbonDr. Sarah Myhill, of  Llangunllo, Powys, has studied the problem. Click here to download her  research paper.

Global warming sceptics in the UK have gathered to mark what they've dubbed 'Climate Fools Day'. On this date two years ago, snow fell in London as the British Parliament was debating a bill to tackle global warming. It was the first such early snowfall for over eighty years. Activists claimed the ironic coincidence was just more proof that the bill is a waste of billions of tax-payers' pounds. One of those doubting the reality of climate change is Reverend Philip Foster, who joins us now live from London.

Wind Turbine Syndrome

NEWS

The Board of Enquiry report on Mighty River Power's proposed wind farm at Turitea will not be available until January 2011. Submitters will then be able to comment on the draft report. So much for trying to fast track and get this disaster "done and dusted " in 9 months. The whole process will have taken over TWO years.

Ngahere Park Rd resident Lyn Bebb said the inquiry had already taken a long time, including a delay when the power company came up with a redesigned scheme.
"I think it's a very long time to be making a decision," she said.

But Palmerston North businessman Simon Barnett said it was important for the board to take the time to make a high-quality decision as the impact of it on the community could be felt for decades.

Kahuterawa Rd landowner Tony Stewart said he felt the longer the decision-making process took, the greater the chance the proposal would be rejected or significantly altered.

Manawatu Standard story here.

Tertiary sector salaries figures, released by the State Services Commission on Thursday, revealed Massey vice-chancellor Steve Maharey takes home between $470,000 and $479,999 annually.

This is the man, who as MP for Palmerston North, admitted privately that he didn't want the wind farm but despite repeated approaches by members of the community did nothing. If he did not want to jeopardise his exit from politics - he had 470,000 reasons why.

The largest natural intervention in Norwegian history becomes known, when a power company wants to build thousands of wind turbines along the coast.  A superb, very new, fast loading, 25 min film on Europe's wind farm disasters.
Every thing is covered: corruption, greed, unsaleable property, intolerable noise, ecological and landscape vandalism, brainless, abusive politicians, abuse of the democratic process, alienation of impoverished protest groups and of course how utterly useless wind is as a realistic energy source. We have been telling the morons at PNCC and local MPs this for 4 years to no avail. It's all up to you now, Judge Kenderdine.

Should we be surprised?

One of the top earners was Mighty River Power's chief executive Doug Heffernan, who made a total of $1.3m, up only slightly from $1.25m last year.
That was during a year when the company's net profit fell to $84.5m from $159.6m during an exceptionally good 2009 year.
Mr Heffernan's biggest increase was a $53,000 rise in long-term incentives.
His short-term incentives were virtually unchanged and fixed pay lifted from just over $10,000 to $934,000.
Mighty River failed four of its performance targets but was the best performer of the four power giants for return on capital, returning 9.7 per cent.

Stating the obvious.

"...... no matter how hard we try, electricity systems will continue to rely mostly on supply side adjustments. Today, this is manageable, because most sources are either providing steady power flows (such as coal, nuclear or run-of-river hydro power plants) or then they are mostly controllable (such as gas fired power plants or hydropower from dammed water pools). With that mix of inputs, electricity on demand becomes possible for most advanced economies. Additions of wind and solar power over the last decade introduced renewable electricity generation technologies into the grid. Those two sources have none of the above qualities: they neither provide steady flows, nor are they controllable. “No wind” means "no power", so does “no sunshine”, and even sharing across long-distances using high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission lines won’t change that fact, due to the stochastic nature of the inputs. Potentially crippling power outages will happen regularly in societies that rely on large percentages of these technologies to meet their electricity demand.  With that, the current system of just-in-time electricity delivery would be replaced by one with irregular service interruptions. And yet there are plans made worldwide suggesting that we can produce 20, 30 or 50% of our future electricity consumption from those two sources. This is self-deception at best, and a lie at worst, as it is simply impossible to manage delivery systems where both inputs and outputs are largely uncontrollable, irrespective of other features added."

"People are fed up with having their property devalued and sleep ruined by noise from large wind turbines," says the association's president, Boye Jensen Odsherred. "We receive constant calls from civic groups that want to join."
In one typical battle, in the central city of Svendborg, the local council set height and number limits on turbines under heavy pressure from locals. "The violent protests and the uncertainty about low-frequency noise means that right now we will not expose our citizens to large windmills," said the deputy mayor, Lars Erik Hornemann."

He also fails to mention that six of the 12 representatives were then, or are now, consultants to the wind energy companies, or promoters of wind energy.

July 1st becomes April 1st

During the January 2010 cold snap in the United Kingdom, wind was able to generate power at only 4% of its rated capacity. Jeremy Nicholson, Director of an Industrial Energy Consumers group, noted, “Even if we had 30 gigawatts of wind power, it wouldn’t have contributed anything of any significance this winter...” (UK, Telegraph)
NB it's even worse in the Manawatu, it's 1% of installed capacity during winter peaks.

The decision by the Turitea Board of Enquiry has yet to be made public. Obviously deliberations have been comprehensive and are ongoing. This delay is clearly influenced by the fierce opposition to a massive wind farm in our water supply, last remaining native forest and towering over 2,000 houses. We will post the decision as soon as it is becomes available.

Press Release: New Zealand Climate Science Coalition

Prime Minister John Key has been asked by a former National Party activist either to rein in his Chief Science Adviser, Professor Sir Peter Gluckman, or to change his title to more accurately reflect the professor’s global warming propaganda advocacy activities.
"Now, with Climate Minister Nick Smith having embarked on a self-confessed publicity tour to counter growing opposition among business leaders, farmers and cash-strapped consumers to the introduction on 1 July of National’s go-it-alone ETS, out comes Professor Gluckman again defending the pseudo-science that is the only justification for the costly but futile attempts to curb emissions of carbon dioxide".

For all we know this is how Environment Minister Dick Smith gets his advice on the crippling ETS and how to massage public opinion. His problem is that it's not working.

Judge Shonagh Kenderdine's handling of the Turitea enquiry strongly defended.
Dear Editor
I wish to take issue with a remark printed in the article "Wind farm boost for region - Trustpower" on page 14 of yesterday's (Wednesday 31 March 2010) Manawatu Standard. A Mr. Deion Campbell, major projects manager for Trustpower, is reported to have said that 'the resource consent submissions process was used by people actively opposed to a project, as witnessed during the "pretty messy" Turitea hearings'. Having attended virtually all of the said hearings I do not recall seeing him there and I wish to emphatically point out that the said Hearings were anything but messy. I take great exception to the insult to Judge Shonagh Kenderdine who most graciously and informally ran the court - which process ran like clockwork. Also, it should be noted that Mr. N. Davidson QC, Counsel for Mighty River Power, commented at the end of the sessions 'I can speak for all counsel here, because there is a common perspective that we have seldom, if ever, appeared before a more courteous, more responsive Board'. I, and others, take offence at the cheap shot made by Mr Deion Campbell. Also he might like to provide the newspaper or me with the questions asked in the 2009 telephone survey that the proponents are so fond of quoting, the people targeted, and also the answers received in detail. But I expect that is conveniently confidential.
Yours sincerely

Time for wind farm decision

Now, it's decision time. After 10 weeks of debate at a public hearing spanning nine months, in a process costing millions of dollars, a board of inquiry weighing up whether Mighty River Power should be allowed to build up to 104 wind turbines on the Tararua Ranges near Palmerston North will come to a judgment.

Wind farm fix claims disputed

http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/news/3520721/Wind-farm-fix-claims-disputed

Claims at the Turitea Wind Farm hearing in Palmerston North that noise problems at a Wellington wind farm have been fixed are being disputed by residents there.
Meridian has made a series of changes at its wind farm in Makara, Wellington, reducing a problem with tonal sound.
Makara Guardians president Steve Russell said Meridian had not solved noise issues, however.
He put down fewer complaints recently to "complaint fatigue" and different wind conditions to normal.
Note: Makara is a relatively unpopulated, rural area. 10% of the residents of Palmerston North will live right underneath 40 story turbines.

MRP's offensively arrogant noise experts, Hegley and Day were hung out to dry at the hearing, not that this bland report actually indicates what really happened. Furthermore, there is an egregious error as Dr Thorne, expert witness for Huatau Marae, determined that the setback from turbines should be 3.5 kms, NOT 2kms.

On the back foot at the hearings, Mighty River Power desperately tries to recover.

Avaricious wind farmers, not content with 31 turbines on their property towering over their wretched neighbours, want the 4 axed reinstated.

Experts clash over wind farm noise

In a new book, Sound, Noise, Flicker and the Human Perception of Wind Farm Activity, Prof Dickinson said standards were highly questionable.
"The problem is that standards cost money, and inevitably are funded by those organisations that are concerned only with what the standard can do to advance their business interests."
He commented that "those at the receiving end of the noise, or concerned about the health implications on local communities, will have little or no influence".

At best, this is a wild exaggeration, unsupported by any scientific research, referenced only to a report produced by a Canadian advocacy group, written by an obscure Moroccan academic who specialises in carbon trading, citing references which do not support his claims.

"STRIKING parallels between the BBC’s coverage of the global warming debate and the activities of its pension fund can be revealed today.
The corporation is under investigation after being inundated with complaints that its editorial coverage of climate change is biased in favour of those who say it is a man-made phenomenon.

The £8billion pension fund is likely to come under close scrutiny over its commitment to promote a low-carbon economy while struggling to reverse an estimated £2billion deficit.
Concerns are growing that BBC journalists and their bosses regard disputed scientific theory that climate change is caused by mankind as “mainstream” while huge sums of employees’ money is invested in companies whose success depends on the theory being widely accepted."

"So now we really know why BBC staffers are so fanatical about 'climate change'. It's naked self-interest. In 2008, there were 18,736 contributors to the BBC pension fund; every man jack of them benefits from climate alarmism."

An Honest IPCC Scientist Tackles 'ClimateGate'

Up Copenhagen creek minus a paddle - Dompost 26/1/10

The Jigs Up - text and video.

The mainstream print media is on notice. It's relevance and future is in doubt. Just how many NZ newspapers are on the financial ropes? The Manawatu Standard? The Turitea wind farm elephant is in the room, but pretty much all it seems to report on is crime in the city, while it's circulation drops. Other media are waking up.

"While Marxists, liberals, environmental extremists, and the Mao-loving minions of the nanny state bombard the public with false information, leftwing propaganda, and rubbish that in no way qualifies as news, the mouthpieces for the government refuse to report factual stories that poke holes in the brainwashing bilge we are fed incessantly"
This is ample enough reason to turn away from traditional sources of news and turn toward the 'alternative media' as reported on the Internet by bloggers and citizen journalists."

Well, the glaciers ain't melting out of control AND now all those mega storms ain't coming either!!

Glaciergate: Hitler's Last Straw.

Anthropogenic Global Warming as an excuse to blight the city with this wind farm has been totally demolished. Any moderately endowed 15 year old with an internet connection can find this out within minutes. There is plenty of information on this web site to support the rapidly growing global awareness that AGW is a total scam and that wind farms are an ultra expensive folly.

"AGW theory is toast. So’s Dr Rajendra Pachauri. So’s the Stern Review. So’s the credibility of the IPCC. But if you think I’m cheered by this you’re very much mistaken. I’m trying to write a Climategate book but the way things are going by the time I’m finished there won’t be anything left to say: the battle will already have been won and the only people left who still believe in Man Made Global Warming will be the eco-loon equivalents of those wartime Japanese soldiers left abandoned and forgotten on remote Pacific atolls."

"The IPCC, a political organisation charged with making a political case for political action, has failed in its primary task because it misrepresented the science of global warming. They have taken numerous documents from an activist organisation, the WWF, and presented them as if they were peer-reviewed science. They have taken news interviews regarding the melting of Himalayan glaciers and presented them as if they were peer-reviewed science. They have taken erroneous papers that were later retracted regarding possible increased damages due to hurricanes and floods and presented them as correct and peer-reviewed science. All this while some of the movement's champions were enriching themselves and their companies on public funds."

UN climate corruption, could it ever get worse than this???

Oh yes, it just did! Click these links.

AR4, which earnt Gore and Pauchari a Nobel prize appears to have been largely written by the activist WWF with non peer reviewed "science" You just can't make this stuff up!!

Remember the oil for food scandal? Iraq's WMD ? Well the fake science of AGW endorses punitive financial action which will affect everyone on this planet.
Palmerston North will be a certain victim if Judge Kenderdine gives the nod to turn the city into a monstrous propeller park. Kenderdine presided over the Westwind wind farm, now torturing Makara residents.

IPCC's chairman Pauchari, himself a beneficiary of the fossil fuel industry and recipient of massive climate research grants, is in deep trouble.

Note: the melting of the glaciers has been put off now for another 300 years

HIGH NOON for Pachauri

UPDATE: links to new information posted at the bottom of this article, including a new story from the Times

UPDATE2: Jonathan Leake’s story at the Time is Online, linking Pauchari’s TERI organization to government funding grants that were solicited using the bogus “Himalayan glaciers will disappear by 2035″ claim.

Christopher Booker of the Telegraph has a story that shows Pachauri’s own employee at TERI was the source of the bogus glacier claim. Now the corruption comes full circle.

UPDATE3: Pachauri now bizarrely claims in a press interview that the IPCC’s credibility has been strengthened.

IMHO, Dr. Pachauri is toast. He has nowhere to go except out.

Mighty River Power's star witness, global warming extremist and prominent Greenpeace "Sign On" activist, Jim Salinger, protesting on Parliament steps November 2009. New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) sacked Salinger in April 2009. The Employment Relations Authority has since upheld NIWA's dismissal of Salinger.

Salinger accused of faking NZ climate data - see earlier post below - is a totally biased and unreliable witness. This just goes to show the depths to which Mighty River Power will sink to get it's way.

Dr Salinger's emails, form part of an exchange between a number of climate experts on how to respond to a paper by Auckland University scientist Chris de Freitis and two others.
That paper- published in the Journal of Geophysical Research- claimed the el nino and la nina weather patterns were a dominant infuence on climate change.
In one July email, Dr Salinger reacts to de Freitis: "Is there an opportunity to write a letter to JGR (Journal of Geophysical Research) pointing out the junk science in this??...If it is not rebutted , then sceptics will use this to justify their position."

And meanwhile what does NIWA have to say about NZ weather for January 2010?
The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research says this January could be one of the coldest on record.
Some parts of New Zealand, including Wellington and the Canterbury coast, have experienced maximum temperatures of around 12 degrees in the past three days.
NIWA says that’s 10 or more degrees below what is normally expected at this time of year.
Climate scientist Dr James Renwick says temperatures in much of New Zealand are more than one degree, and in some places more than two degrees, below normal to date this month.
He says that’s remarkable and New Zealand could be set for a record cool January if low temperatures continue for the rest of month.

Meridian loses Lakes Hayes Wind farm appeal

John Bishop
Friday November 6 2009 - 02:31pm

Meridian Energy has lost its appeal for its Project Hayes wind farm project in the Lammermore Range in Central Otago.
The company planned to build 176 wind turbines over a 92 km ² area in the Lammermore Range in Central Otago, making it the biggest wind farm in the country. The project would have generated 630MW of electricity.
The company applied for resource consents from the Central Otago District Council in July 2006. The council granted the consents, but the decision was appealed to the Environment Court by local conservation and environmental groups.
The split decision by the Environment Court may effectively spell an end to the project as appeals against a decision of the Environment Court are possible only on points of law.
Meridian spokesman Alan Seay said that the company was disappointed by the decision but was still studying the 350 page decision, and was not commenting on whether or on what grounds it might appeal.

Listen to the twice deleted but now recovered interview with Dr Heffernan, Nick Smith's "friend". We'll let you draw your own conclusions as to the degree of conspiracy against the city. This interview was not allowed to be played to the Board of Enquiry for whatever reason. There are two sources where you can access this interview. The whole interview casts an intriguing light on MRP, in particular from 5 mins 35 into the broadcast.

Here is the transcript of Heffernan's evidence to the board.
MR McCLELLAND: Yes, can you hear me? I just want to check a couple of things quickly. Were you the one that went on Radio Live and said this wind farm was to be the same size as Te Apiti? (INDISTINCT30 4.38.51)
DR HEFFERNAN: I don’t recall the actual interview but I think I do recall being asked about the type of turbines that were likely to be used and I do not ever recall being asked about the size of the wind farm. But I do recall being asked about the size of wind turbines, and I said that I expected that the type of technology would be similar to Te Apiti andtherefore of a similar scale.

PERTINENT PART OF INTERVIEW BETWEEN MARCUS LUSH AND DOUG HEFFERNAN
ML In terms of Turitea what sort of size, number of turbines, and compared to the other one in the Tararuas - is it a bigger wind farm than that?

DH Oh, -- its of a similar size to the Meridian Te Apiti windfarm in the Tararuas - yes.

ML OK, and it would be more than the Lammermoors in the South Island - is that right?

DH I'm not sure I don't know enough detail about the Lammermoor one.

Heffernan deliberately lied to the NZ public to cover up the extent of MRP's planned crime against Palmerston North. This is, in our opinion, clear evidence of a conspiracy sanctioned by the Big Government push for an Emissions Trading Scheme which will tax and regulate peoples' lives in a way the former Soviet block would have envied. It has nothing to do with the "climate" Are we about to forfeit our sovereignty at Copenhagen in December?

Wind a joke.
Clive James on skepticism.

Peter Wheeler, Palmerston North City Councillor perceptively sums up the situation:
22nd October 2009.

The opposite of duplicity is honesty. When the government accepted Mighty River Power’s [MRP] call in request and set up a Court of Inquiry’ duplicity replaced honesty. The inquiry’s public persona is one of approving or rejecting MRP’s plans, which implies that the court has the option to approve or not approve the plan. Not true, for this court has been set up not to approve or disapprove but to confirm the level of the project. The government has already decided that the project will proceed.
For duplicity to be practiced one needs people or organisations that can be duped. In the case of the Turitea wind farm project the first group or organisation duped was the local City Council, both its staff and elected councillors. The Palmerston North City Council [PNCC] was willingly duped by the possibility of big money for little effort. In fact the PNCC started this duplicitous behaviour by seeking a bidder to put turbines on its reserve land. While it is easy and convenient to blame an individual such as Mr. Paul Wylie who was the three hundred thousand-dollar plus CEO at the time who recommended the project conception. It was the elected council of the time who set the duplicitous behaviour in motion.
Once the PNCC accepted MRP’s seemingly generous offer the next step in this duplicitous saga got underway. MRP went out with a partly detailed plan and a blank chequebook and commenced to buy off, or buy compliance, for wind turbines outside of the PNCC reserve land. They needed to do this so as to expand the project and turn it into a profitable endeavour that would reward its master the government which of course owns and controls MRP. This behaviour by MRP and by-default the PNCC borders the muddy middle ground of dishonesty and honesty. There is a fine line between honesty and legality and misrepresentation and illegality. It is the reason why MRP are spending hundreds of thousands if not millions on lawyers and experts. Not one of the experts paid for by MRP recommended that the project should not proceed. So while the expectation is that the experts will express views that are based on the facts, the reality is that to earn their huge fees and retainers they need to satisfy MRP’s main objective. The outcome is that so-called individual supporters of the wind farm concept who are appearing at the hearing, assisted by legal representation, in their own right while also receiving money or promises of future rewards from MRP. No matter how kindly
We must never forget that this process was automatically dishonest because of its duplicitous nature. Each day of the seven weeks of hearings has proven that full mitigation is simply hogwash. The fact that MRP is at this point rethinking its project is a clear indicator that its original concepts were ill thought out, badly planned, financially dangerous and socially and environmentally stupid. The hearings will possibly recommence in March or April of 2010. At that point MRP could well have been sold off and its over paid executive may have shifted out of NZ to the Cayman Islands. One can only hope…

Analysis: King Canute at the G8
Wall Street Journal

When King Canute of lore wanted to teach his citizens a lesson, he set his throne by the seashore and commanded the tides to roll out. Canute’s spirit was back in business this week at the G-8 summit in Italy, where the assembled leaders declared that the world’s temperature shall not rise: “We recognize the scientific view that the increase in global average temperature above pre-industrial levels ought not to exceed 2 degrees [Celsius],” or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, said the summit declaration.

So let it be written, so let it be done. As for how they will achieve this climate-defying feat, well, the leaders were somewhat less definitive: “we will work… to identify a global goal for substantially reducing global emissions by 2050.” Translation: Since the heads of the world’s leading economies couldn’t agree on an actual policy on climate change, they opted instead to command the clouds, the seas and all of the Earth to cool. Or maybe they were finally admitting that this whole climate business is getting too expensive, so let’s just throw out a goal that everyone knows is beyond the reach of kings, much less democratic leaders.

The politics of climate change have always been long on apocalyptic rhetoric but short on policy realism. But a global economic crisis does have a way of shearing away illusions about the price people and their leaders, elected or otherwise, are willing to pay in higher taxes, higher prices and economic competitiveness to perhaps make a fractional dent on the temperature. Concerns about high costs and lost jobs have already threatened or killed carbon-emissions control schemes in enviro-conscious Australia and New Zealand. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, another sunshine environmentalist, insisted on exemptions for German industry, including cement and steel, from last year’s EU climate deal, which pledged to reduce carbon emissions by 20% from 1990 levels by 2020. Italy engineered its own escape clause, requiring the EU to renegotiate its climate policy after a U.N. climate change summit in Copenhagen later this year. That probably kills the European deal, since China (the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases), India and other developing countries showed this week that they are unlikely to agree to any draconian emissions cuts.

European politicians have been wondrously adept at signing on to climate pacts, like the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which they have no real intention of honoring even as they enjoy taking the political credit. But really binding agreements are becoming harder to reach this time around, thanks to mounting opposition from businesses and labor unions.

Philippe Varin, chief executive of Corus, Europe’s second-largest steel producer, told the London Independent in December that the cost of carbon credits and new technologies needed to reduce emissions would destroy European steel production, forcing manufacturers overseas. Poland’s Jaroslaw Grzesik of the Solidarity trade union estimated last month that the EU’s climate policy would cost 800,000 European jobs. The London-based Open Europe think tank has estimated the climate package would cost European economies over a trillion dollars in the coming decade.

Meanwhile, the supposed economic benefits of “green technologies” are evaporating. In Germany, government subsidies for installing solar panels—and, it was presumed, thereby creating domestic manufacturing jobs—backfired when it turned out that it was cheaper to make solar panels in China. A recent paper from Spanish economist Gabriel Calzada Alvarez noted that since Spain started investing in a “green jobs” policy nine years ago, the country has lost 110,500 jobs in other parts of the economy. That amounts to 2.2 jobs lost for every green job created.

European leaders still do pray to the climate gods, and they would love to see the U.S. burden its own industries with the kind of cap-and-tax bill just approved by the House. But even Senate Democrats are getting wise to the political risks they run for tying the economy down with regulatory schemes that America’s competitors in Europe and Asia will either flout or ignore. In the legend of Canute, the king, after failing to stop the rising tide, told the assembled crowd: “Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for there is none worthy of the name, but He whom heaven, earth and sea obey by eternal laws.” If a medieval monarch could draw the right conclusion, how hard can it be for his sophisticated 21st-century successors

'Excessive' noise upsets residents "
Manawatu Standard
04/08/2009
The owner of Te Rere Hau wind farm, New Zealand Windfarms, is confident its turbines comply with noise limits, despite an increasing number of complaints.

Palmerston North City Council had received 14 noise complaints since early May, principal planner Virginia Shaw said.

People had complained about having difficulty sleeping, a "droning" sound and "excessive rumble".

The number of complaints was higher than for other wind farm developments, she said.

New Zealand Windfarms has been monitoring noise levels as the number of turbines has built up from five to about 50 in the past year.

The company has consent to build 97 turbines at the site in the Tararua Ranges, about 11 kilometres east of Palmerston North.

New Zealand Windfarms had provided the city council with a report on the noise issue and the council would get a noise expert to review that report, Ms Shaw said.

New Zealand Windfarms chief executive Steve Cross said the company monitored noise levels to make sure it was meeting the conditions of its consent.

"We're pretty confident about that," he said. New Zealand Windfarms sourced its two-bladed turbines from Christchurch supplier Windflow Technology.

There were gearbox problems initially, leading to the replacement of gearboxes for all five turbines that were up at Te Rere Hau in 2007.

On May 29 this year, New Zealand Windfarms lodged a resource consent application to install a further 56 turbines.

That would bring the total to 153 turbines, if the consent is approved.

New Zealand Windfarms announced in December last year it was to become the full owner of Te Rere Hau.

Since that investment, the company had sold its interest in an Otago project.

The past week was for me a steep learning curve. The Board of Inquiry [BOI] looking into the Mighty River Power [MRP] Turitea Wind Farm Proposal is now well underway. I’ve learned that MRP has money running out of its ears. Its line up of lawyers includes a QC plus engineers, PR experts and they swamp the room. They are accompanied by heaps of assistants aides, baby lawyers and boxes and boxes of files. Black suits abound, both male and female, power dressing absolutely dominates the room at the Travelodge in Cuba Street. It’s odd to think that our power accounts and taxes are paying for this lawyer’s free for all convention regardless of being for or against.

Sitting in the back row are various anxious local landowners that appear desperate to get their hands on the money flowing out of government coffers via MRP’s chequebook? So, young Ms Paula Bennett, Minister in charge of DPB and media broadcasting, would in some respects call them a bunch of ‘welfare beneficiaries’ who need checking out? They’ve even hired lawyers to cross-examine both MRP and those opposed to the windfarm, it is unknown if they are individually paying the massive legal fees or if MRP is paying them under the terms of their secret pay out deals. Now this is strange behaviour since these few landowners consider themselves partners with MRP. It’s a bit like double dipping from the tax / ratepayers purse. Still it beats farming for a crust…that’s for sure.

What MRP thinks about intelligence levels of the citizens of the region was clearly shown. It’s so-called people/opinion/perception expert [I never knew there were such creatures] Mr. Emanuel Kalafatelis suggested that those who answered MRP’s questionnaire on support for or against had a reading age of around twelve. Yet they still accepted its screwed outcomes. A by-product of this public relations rubbish got me thinking… what would the average reading age be of those in the hearing room be…older than twelve…or younger.

The groups opposing MRP are at a huge disadvantage in that unlike MRP who are flying in experts from here and abroad at our expense. [The PNCC at least gets their five-dollar departure tax] those opposing have to fit their experts in around their normal employment and work timetables, plus cover the costs. A clear example of this was when a Department of Conservation [DOC] representative turned up out of the blue and told the BOI how they had been working with MRP on the issue of their application for sometime. The Judge absolutely and correctly directed DOC to share the information made available to MRP with the opposition and that the BOI would ignore the report purchased by MRP from DOC in the meantime. It is correct to state that money has no conscience…it can buy anything.

Palmerston North said...

Continued

I am a bit suspicious of this behaviour by DOC and MRP, we should remember they [DOC] are the crowd who took a huge payment from a windfarm developer in the South Island and attempted to keep it secret. They were successful up until those opposing the project revealed the information. We all know that the government is cutting funding to DOC. could this contracting out to MRP be a part of DOC’s effort to stem the outflow? How much did MRP pay for the report? When was the deal signed? Was it during the period that MRP was ripping off electricity consumers by ratcheting up prices? Does DOC have any other secret links to MRP? Did the Government Minister Nick Smith order DOC in this direction?

The BOI is about half way through and is a couple of days behind schedule, it will reconvene with a site visit. No doubt MRP will provide a picnic lunch for all concerned. I hope they visit the homes of those effected to get a taste of just what living under a wind turbine as massive as a rugby field will be like.

The city council has a lawyer representing it [John Maassen] and his official position is neutral. He has a most difficult task because council under Paul Wylie signed up with MRP to enable them, if consent was granted by the Environmental Court, to build in the water reserve area wind turbines numbering around 40. What MRP was also doing was chequebook dealing with local landowners for the right to build turbines on their property. While some sold out and left the area others saw it as a chance for financial gain and signed up. No doubt the actual amounts vary but it is rumoured that amounts range from $15.000 per turbine to $25.000 per turbine per year. One farm is said to have twenty planned sites while another has six or seven recommended sites. MRP agreed to follow the standard procedure for seeking approval. It then decided without formal discussion with its partner [PNCC] to seek that the project be ‘called in’, this was a legal process by which they could by-pass the normal processes. More importantly it meant that the city council could not bill MRP for the full costs involved, which meant that they had roughly a half a million more dollars to spend on public relations activities, landowner payments and a multitude of lawyers. Those opposing were also greatly disadvantaged in that they now cannot appeal against the COI findings other than on points of law.

While it is easy to be wise after the event I believe that the then CEO Paul Wylie was captured by thoughts of easy dollars when he recommended and convinced a majority that council accept MRP’s offer. The council at the time was heavily in debt but I believe that this present council would not have accepted. While many have pushed the so-called advantages [Cash inflow] the disadvantages of lowered land values, massive social disruption, environmental ruination and dangerous risks to our water supply would have seen an early rejection of MRP’s offer. The fact is that MRP failed to honour the agreement reached. Unlike private companies who have planned windfarms and who now are going broke, MRP a government owned company seems to have a bottomless bucket of cash even in these hard times. While a commission found them guilty of price fixing and raising prices unnecessarily they continue down the track of huge spending knowing that they can simply raise their charges to cover costs.

I just cannot believe what I am reading in the transcripts of the hearing. There is talk on landscape, plants, birds, water. Maori culture, cumulative effects etc - but nothing yet about people! Nothing about the 16,000 rate payers whose lives will / could be ruined, Hopefully this will come in the next few sessions when the opposing factions have there small and cheap say.
It is obvious that the council is running scared and so it should.
Even though they say they are neutral, they are now clearly against the project. Not realising how big the project was going to be is just sheer negligence - those that voted for the change of use for the Reserve should resign!
I do hope the Board does not listen to the so called noise experts that MRP have paid to say what they want them to say as no one except God himself will know now much noise these monsters will make - and they will make alot of noise! Up to 4 kilimetres away.
I listened to the noise expert on
T3 employed by TrustPower say that "these larger turbines will make no more noise that the small ones that are up there already" - BUT T3 is horrifically noisy! During a still night with an easterly breeze, you can hear them over 3 k's away, whereas you could never hear the small T1 turbines.
More and more noise complaints are comimg in from the Te Rere Hau two bladed monstersities and they are only half way through building them! The last I heard indepentant tests put noise levels way over the legal limit and they are busy stuffing the insides of the towers with rubber or anything they can find to lessen the noise - I would not like to invest in that company!
When will Palmerston North people come to their senses and not allow us to be a testing ground for wind factories.

1 MILLION TONNES OF CARBON SAVED PER ANNUM... BUT IS THE TURITEA WIND FARM A GOOD IDEA?
Submitted by Joseph Poff on Fri, 31/07/2009 - 12:34
Hi, this is my first ever online entry to discussion groups... so here goes!
The Turitea Wind Farm Resource Consent Application is currently before a Board of Enquiry after being "Called In" by the Minister. Public interest is minimal, I have attended all 7 days of hearings so far and the same few members of the public turn up each day, we are approx 10 people, 5 for and 5 against. Of course there are also about 40 persons here including the lawyers, commissioners, consultants and administration staff. All arguments against the proposal have been thoroughly discredited so far but the big one is coming soon... LANDSCAPE!
Yes we will see wind turbines. No argument there. But surely this would be a good thing? The Turitea WF would employ one of the worlds best wind resources to provide clean green electricity, enough for approx 120,000 homes and save about 1 million tonnes of Carbon per year. This project will directly benefit the City Rate Payers through royalty payments as they own the Turitea Reserve, this is a water catchment reserve and NOT a nature reserve. It will create 250 jobs in construction, has widespread public support and many other benefits for the reserve and the wider region.
The SIGN ON campaign is a great idea but we need to make sure that Carbon reducing initiatives are supported at the coal face of decision making in our communities. I would like to see Sign On supporters come down to the hearings, wear a White Shirt or better still wear a SIGN ON tee shirt! (These are great Tee Shirts, NZ Made, good quality and look good) There is no need for protest action but your presence will reinforce the notion of public support.
If you are interested I would like to see you here. At this time the hearings will resume on Thursday 6th August at The Travel Lodge Hotel, Cuba St, Palmerston North, but please visit the following web site to get the latest Hearing Times and all relevant information regarding this project. mfe.govt.nz/rma/central/call-ins
Talking about climate change is good but here we can help to actually DO something to address this most pressing issue.
Do it for our childrens sake!
Note: I want to identify myself as a proud minor partner in this project as I run a farm which has a boundary with the Reserve and may receive some Wind Turbines as part of this project.

The Turitea wind farm

Unfortunately this project is attracting very strong opposition, in particular from the New Zealand Green Party. We know there will be no turbines allowed on private land, which is something we expected to happen, still it is most encouraging that private land owners like Joseph Poff are keen supporters of the project, even though he and his family will live right under the 40 story turbines in the reserve. Noise shouldn't be a problem as Joseph has told me that he enjoys the hum and thump of the Te Rere Hau turbines, which are right next door to him on the Pahiatua track. We need more people like the Poff family. If there were more like them we would be putting turbines up everywhere to save the planet.
Mike.

I agree Mike - more private land owners need to make a stand.

UNSUNG HEROES TOIL FOR THE TURITEA WIND FARM

Submitted by Mike Jack on Sat, 17/10/2009 - 18:39.
Incredibly the fabulous but massive Turitea wind farm is on the skids. This is unacceptable. Joseph Poff and Sign On member who has tirelessly campaigned for this climate changing wind farm around his property on the Pahiatua track has had to put up with coin jangling opponents and the Palmerston North city council, which, as he so eloquently put it, has now become an opponent of the scheme, having originally been in favour. Joseph and his son worked so hard garnering support, even personally filling out forms for the 20%, from as far afield as Christchurch, Germany and Ireland, who submitted in support of the scheme. This is the kind of activism we who want to make the weather colder can only applaud. If he hadn’t done this there would have only been a miserable 10% in support.
The selfish agitators who run www.palmerston-north.info are accusing Mighty River Power CEO, Doug Heffernan and project manager Mark Henry of PERJURY !!! This is appalling. Yes, we may have to at times step outside the boundaries to get a colder climate BUT THESE THREE ARE OUR HEROES. Well done faithful servants of the greater good. Lodge your complaint with the MFE.

Mike, Joseph Poff is only after one thing $$$$ MONEY, the wind turbines that are being proposed on his farm are know where near his house, they are by his neighbours houses, I'm sure he nor you would like one of these things within 900m of your bedroom.

Hi Joseph, Peter and I called

Submitted by Mike Jack on Sat, 17/10/2009 - 18:36.
Hi Joseph, Peter and I called into the hearings wearing our high quality NZ made SIGN ON tee shirts under our jackets but unfortunately it was too cold to expose ourselves. You are doing a good job, Joseph. Pity we were the only ones there to support you. Judge Kenderdine clearly favoured you, we saw that from her body language.

If the earth can be thought of as a personality that loves us all, she won't have a problem with these most beautiful of energy generators.

This devastatingly technology has ruined the historic landscapes of the UK. They generate no power when the wind blows too hard and are a mere sop to the EU. Poor sad NZers seem to be happy to be sucked in without a wrinkly carrot from anybody at all! Wake up.

how can you say that wind turbines ruin historical landscapes? A lot of people would consider them to be the monuments for the most important event in all human history.

Majestic
Submitted by Jane George on Wed, 18/11/2009 - 21:26.
Views of some of the majestic wind farms across the UK and European countrysides are an awesome sight.
Definitely far more complementary to the landscape than most power stations, or digging up ancient forests and national parklands for mining.
Please NZ, get out of the rut of thinking that we can continue to rely on technology of the past.
I love my country, and I want it to last as long as possible.

He has no interest in the environment, he has a one track mind and that is $$$$ ALL Joseph Poff is after is MONEY!!! He would have to be the most hated man in the Manawatu. If you personally meet this man you would totally understand what he is about.

Now, now, Angela.
Joseph promised me that if he gets approval for the 25 or so forty story wind turbines proposed for his land right above yours and all those other houses that he will make a donation to the local woman's refuge. Such altruism is not to be sniffed at from a man whose favourite party trick is to blow his nose on fifty dollar bills.
He and I plan to go to the next global warming conference in Mexico next year. This will be our last chance to secure the future for all those wanna be carbon traders out there and to sell our remaining sign on tee shirts.
What's "sign on" in Spanish?
Now there's a business opportunity for someone.
